Information

Your cleft team or local hospital may have their own feeding guidelines so do ask them for advice. The Cleft Lip and Palate Association recommends that normal feeding methods should be encouraged. 

Breast feeding is possible for a baby with a cleft lip and where the cleft in the palate is small or narrow. Some babies may need breast milk expressed into bottles to supplement feeding on the breast. Whether breast or bottle fed we stock the following range of bottles and teats for your baby.

These can all be used with teats 1-6, and the bottles squeezed to assist
the baby.

We would stress that there is no miracle teat or bottle that suits all babies. The aim is to have a relaxed mother and a contented baby. The midwife, health visitor, cleft team advisor and mother should all work together to find the best solution for each baby.

Bottles

	Mead Johnson very soft bottle with cross cut teat.  A very soft standard neck 6oz bottle which can be squeezed to help the flow of milk. Any standard teat can be fitted.  £3.30
	Chicco 5oz bottle with collar and spoon A soft bottle which can be squeezed, although stiffer than the Mead Johnson. Any standard teat can be fitted or the spoon used for thickened food i.e made up to custard consistency.  £2.75
	Softplas 250ml (approx. 9oz) soft bottle with collar, disc and robust teat cover A larger standard-necked soft bottle.  Markings in 25mls (30mils is approximately 1oz) £2.00
	WARNING:The use of steam sterilizers is not recommended for these bottles. We would advise immersing in a sterilising solution.

Teats

	Newborn Teat  A very soft flesh coloured teat, similar to those supplied in maternity units, ideal for new babies.  Fits standard-necked bottles.  70p
	Orthodontic Shaped Teat A soft orthodontic shaped teat suitable for babies from 5lbs to 25lbs.  Fits standard-necked bottles.  £1.75 per pack of three
	NUK Vented Teat Size 2  A soft orthodontic shaped teat, vented to assist the elimination of air.  Suitable for babies from 5lbs to 25lbs.  Fits standard-necked bottles.  75p
	NUK Vented Teat Size 1  An orthodontic shaped teat vented to assist the elimination of air, suitable for babies weighing less than 5lbs.  Fits standard-necked bottles. 75p
	NUK Cleft Palate Teat A large flat headed teat.  Not suitable for very small babies but sometimes useful if the baby does not feed well using other teats.  Fits standard-necked bottles.  £3.00
	Tapered Teat A 2" small soft tapered teat supplied without a hole. Fits standard and narrow- necked bottles  90p
	Lambs Teat A 2 1/2" tapered teat, which is found to be good for some babies with a clefts of the soft palate.  Only fits narrow-necked bottles  60p

 

Haberman Feeder A specialised bottle system designed to help babies with sucking problems.
